C&W having an important role in safety of Railway by ensuring fitness of rolling stock with working round the clock at pit lines, stations & yards.
C&W staff examine coaches at pit lines in round the clock working under the coaches involving danger due hitting of head and body parts with the rolling stock components especially in night hours. They are prone to injuries during brake power testing as their fingers etc. get crushed due to heavy force of compressed air pressure on brake riggings and components.
Coaches having toilets are maintained at pit lines which causes unhygienic conditions for the staff. Also Grease, oil & cleaning chemicals used in maintenance of rolling stock have adverse effect on their skin & body. C&W staff always work under all weather conditions in open and uncovered areas at pit lines and yards in very hot & cold weather. It becomes very difficult to work with rolling stock components as they also get affected with hot and cold weather conditions. Also large lengths have to be travelled in yards and pit lines during the working with tools, materials, gadgets and machines.
C&W staff also have responsibility to maintain accident relief trains and perform emergency break down duties on call. C&W staff always remain stressed in for readiness to work in emergency break down duties. They have to seek outstation permission when they want to go out of their HQ. Also it is difficult for them to get leave sanctioned due to requirement of breakdown duties.
